Our view

“A Lion Among Men” turns Gregory Maguire’s “The Wicked Years” towards humour and adventure, with the Cowardly Lion at its centre. Brrr is still haunted by his past, and his uncertain search for a place in the world gives the novel its emotional weight. Some readers who found the earlier volumes weighed down by lofty exposition are glad to find little of it here. It reads best after “Son of a Witch”.
