Our view
“The Familiar” is a dark historical fantasy whose setting is its strongest card. Luzia Cotado, a kitchen servant with a talent for small miracles, must put her magic on show for the powerful while concealing where her family comes from, and the age of the Spanish Inquisition gives that secret real danger. Some readers who loved Leigh Bardugo’s earlier novels come away less satisfied by this one. It stands alone, with no series to follow.
