Our view
“Kraken” is a dark, exuberant urban fantasy that fills a hidden London with squid cults, rival apocalypses and memorable villains. Miéville piles up outlandish inventions without letting the book collapse into silliness, and the supporting characters are vivid. Some readers warm less to the protagonist than to those around him, and some find its humour hard to get along with. It rewards a taste for invention for its own sake.

About the book
Kraken is a 2010 fantasy novel by British author China Miéville. It is published in the UK by Macmillan, and in the US by Del Rey Books. Handed in at the same time as The City & the City, it was chosen to be published at a later date to give the former breathing room. The book bears the subtitle An Anatomy on the title page. It was the winner for the 2011 Locus Award for Best Fantasy Novel.
