Our view

The middle volume of the trilogy mixes magic with war, royal politics and time at sea, and its mood is dark and tense. Some readers single out Nikolai, whose humour and quick thinking bring welcome lightness. As a second instalment it leans entirely on “Shadow and Bone” and should not be read first; those who enjoyed that book’s young adult blend of fantasy and adventure will find more of it here.
