Our view
“Ring” grips as a mystery, uncovering step by step the story behind a videotape. Readers who know the films find Kōji Suzuki’s novel less a frightening horror story than a piece of detective work, and that inquiry into Sadako’s past is what they praise. Some are put off by the way the book treats women, sexual violence and gender, and others find the characters flat. It opens a trilogy continued in “Spiral” and “Loop”.

About the book
Ring is a Japanese mystery horror novel by Koji Suzuki first published in 1991, and set in modern-day Japan. The novel was the first in the Ring novel series, and the first of a trilogy, followed by two sequels: Spiral (1995) and Loop (1998). The original Ring novel sold 500,000 copies by January 1998, and 1.5 million copies by July 2000. Ring was the basis for the Ring franchise, including a 1995 TV film, a 1998 theatrical film of the same name (Ring), a TV series, and two international film remakes of the 1998 film: a South Korean version and an English-language version.
