Our view
Dean Koontz’s “Intensity” lives up to its title: a relentless, claustrophobic duel between a young woman and a serial killer. Chapters alternate between Chyna Shepherd, a college student, and Edgler Vess, the man hunting her, and both her past and his repellent mind hold the attention. Some readers feel the idea would have suited a short story and that at novel length the tension slackens and the characters stay flat.
