Our view

“Magic’s Promise” is a moving middle volume of “The Last Herald-Mage”, steeped in grief, loneliness and duty. Vanyel, unmatched in power yet close to exhaustion, is drawn with his Companion Yfandes into a crisis of dark magic in neighbouring Lineas. Some readers find the introspective opening confusing if the first book is not fresh in mind; others single out its well-handled mystery. Fantasy readers who want real emotional weight will find it here.

About the book

The wild magic is taking its toll on the land, and even Vanyel, the most powerful Herald-Mage to ever walk the world, is almost at the end of his strength. But when his Companion, Yfandes, receives a call for help from neighboring Lineas, both Herald-Mage and Companion are drawn into a holocaust of dark magic that could be the end of them both.
