Our view

“Magic’s Price” is a dark, moving close to “The Last Herald-Mage” trilogy, built on Vanyel’s sense of duty and the loneliness it costs him. With his Companion Yfandes, he defends Valdemar against a master of forbidden magic. Some readers find most of the plot crowded into the last chapters, and its role as a prequel pushing the characters toward a fixed end. It hits hardest for those who have followed Vanyel from the start.

About the book

The final chapter in Mercedes Lackey's spellbinding fantasy trilogy! The Herald-Mage, Vanyel, and his Companion, Yfandes, are alone responsible for saving the once-peaceful kingdom of Valdemar from the forces of a master who wields a dark, forbidding magic. And if either Vanyel or Yfandes falters, both Valdemar and its Herald-Mage must pay the ultimate price.
