The first Southern Vampire Mystery is an easy, unpretentious read. Its small-town Louisiana murder plot with vampires is told without taking itself too seriously. The Southern voice is the main charm, and some readers find it comes across best in audio. Others find the romance between Sookie and Bill rushed and the early chapters flat, with the story improving towards the end. Undemanding fun, though not everyone feels the need to continue the series.
