Our view

“A Darkling Plain” brings Philip Reeve’s “Mortal Engines Quartet” to a moving, fully earned close. In a far-future world still scarred by an ancient catastrophe, the author gathers his many characters one last time for a dark, tense story of war. Every plot thread is tied off with care, though some readers feel it leans on coincidence to bring the characters together. Read it only after the three earlier books.
