Our view

“Predator’s Gold” widens the world of the “Mortal Engines Quartet” in an entertaining second volume. Tom and Hester come upon Anchorage, a city on the ice, and much of what follows prepares the ground for the later books. Some readers find the young pair’s all-or-nothing feelings true to that age; others are frustrated that the heroes are so often rescued instead of acting, or feel too many plotlines are packed into its length.
