Our view

The fifth volume of the saga returns to characters readers count among their favourites, though some fans rank it mid-series rather than at its peak. At more than a thousand pages, with a cast so large that losing track of names is normal, it demands stamina. It is for those already deep in the story, who should know this is the fifth of seven planned volumes, not a conclusion.

Worth knowing Published in July 2011, six years after A Feast for Crows, it first covers the same period in the North and across the sea, then, about halfway through, moves past the end of Feast and brings the two halves of the cast back together. It is the most recent book in the series: the sixth, The Winds of Winter, still has no publication date.
