Our view
The fourth volume of Martin’s saga hands much of its 800 pages to new viewpoints: Cersei, the Greyjoys, Dorne. Readers attached to earlier favourites can find that frustrating on a first read. What rewards patience is the political weave and Martin’s knack for making each figure in a very large cast distinct. The crowd of names can be hard to track, and this is no place to start the series.
Worth knowing Published in 2005 after a five-year gap, it covers only half the cast: Martin split an overlong manuscript by place rather than by time, so this book follows King’s Landing, Dorne, the Iron Islands and the Riverlands, while A Dance with Dragons (2011) covers the same period in the North and across the sea. Some readers interleave the two books chapter by chapter in a fan-made combined order.
