Editor’s note English crime writer, scholar and translator, among the first women to receive an Oxford degree, in 1920. Her Lord Peter Wimsey novels begin as clever puzzles in Whose Body? (1923) and deepen once Harriet Vane, a crime novelist accused of murder, enters in Strong Poison (1930); Gaudy Night (1935), set in a women’s college at Oxford, is the one many readers love most. She later translated Dante’s Divine Comedy. Read the Wimsey books in order, at least from Strong Poison on.
