Dashiell Hammett
Dashiell Hammett — 3 titles in the rankings, first published between 1929 and 1934. They average 7.6, below the 7.8 the whole catalogue averages. One series has a reading order worth keeping to.
Editor’s note American writer who worked as a Pinkerton detective before he wrote crime fiction, and it shows: his stories for Black Mask magazine set the hard-boiled style. Red Harvest (1929) sends the nameless Continental Op into a corrupt mining town; The Maltese Falcon (1930) introduced Sam Spade; The Thin Man (1934), lighter and boozier, gave us Nick and Nora Charles. In 1951 he went to prison for refusing to name the contributors to a bail fund. Start with The Maltese Falcon.
