Quick answer

Publication order
7 volumes2005–2025Ongoing
- Read the first three in order — Old Man's War, The Ghost Brigades, The Last Colony — because they are one arc and the third pays off both.
- Then Zoe's Tale, which is the odd one: it retells The Last Colony from a teenager's point of view, so it only works after it, never instead.
- The Human Division and The End of All Things came years later, were published as weekly episodes before being collected, and read like a television season each; they continue the world rather than the arc.
- The Shattering Peace arrived in 2025, seventeen years after the fourth book.
A plan for the whole series
7 volumes, 2,325 pages, about 45 hours. At 45 min a day that is about 8 weeks.
Share of volume 1’s readers who reach the last volume. Chance of reaching the last volume: low
- From volume 2 on, the number of ratings falls most before volume 4, “Zoe's Tale” (by 41%). Plan your break after volume 3, before the series plans it for you.
- Readers scored volume 2, “The Ghost Brigades”, below its predecessor (8.1 after 8.3). If you slow down there, that is on the book, not on you.
- The series is still running; the last volume came out in 2025. You will wait for the next one anyway, so no need to rush.

3 stages, with 2 short books from outside the series between them. You finish around January 12, 2027, 19 days later than in one go.

How this plan is calculated
The plan comes from the pages and ratings of each volume: we split the series into stages of about three weeks’ reading, size each break to the stage before it, and read the chance of finishing from how many readers rate the last volume compared with the first. How we work out the plan →
