Editor’s note Warbreaker, from 2009, is a standalone in Brandon Sanderson’s Cosmere and the one he wrote in public, posting drafts online as he went. Two princesses of a small mountain kingdom: Siri, the younger, is sent in her sister’s place to marry the God King of Hallandren, a man nobody has heard speak, and Vivenna, raised for that marriage, follows her into the city to get her out. The magic is Breath, which every person has one of and can give away, and which the rich collect by the thousand; the gods of Hallandren are people who died and came back, and one of them, Lightsong, does not believe in his own religion and is the book’s best voice. There is also a sword that talks and wants to be drawn. About 600 pages, and it works with no other Sanderson read.

  • “Warbreaker is such an interesting book with so many classic Sanderson elements, but just doesn’t quite put them all together as effectively as a lot of his other works do. The worldbuilding is incredible as always. It’s almost mistbornesque in that it’s urban based, with…”
