Our view

“The Way of Shadows” is dark, bloody assassin fantasy, praised for its characters more than for new ideas. Some readers find the first hundred pages the best, taut and fast, and the remaining five hundred looser; others feel that explanations are missing, not least about how the magic works. The early chapters follow the characters as children, which does not suit everyone. A solid start to a trilogy for readers who like their fantasy grim.
