Our view

Anne McCaffrey’s “The Ship Who Sang” is a humane, thoughtful novel about a woman whose brain is wired into a starship. McCaffrey assembled it from five stories written between 1961 and 1969, which gives it the shape of a chain of episodes. Some readers find the joins abrupt and the treatment of women dated. Anyone drawn to classic science fiction that asks what makes a person human will find plenty here.
