Our view

“The Screaming Staircase” opens “Lockwood & Co.” with a ghost story that manages to be frightening and funny at once. It is well paced and cleanly written, and hauntings, detective work and friendship each get their share. Some readers who scare easily report a racing heart even though the book is aimed at a young audience. A good first step into Jonathan Stroud’s work.
