Editor’s note Published in 1979, it was printed in two colours, red for Bastian’s world and green for Fantastica, and each of its 26 chapters opens on the next letter of the alphabet. Single-colour editions lose this, so a two-colour edition is worth seeking out. Wolfgang Petersen’s 1984 film covers only the first half of the book; the second half, in which Bastian himself enters Fantastica, is left out.
