Our view
Science fiction that cares about its crew far more than its plot. The appeal is the company: a mismatched ship’s crew of several species, in a galaxy where humans are latecomers and a minority, which lets the novel look at prejudice from an unusual angle. Some readers find events few and slow to arrive across almost 500 pages, and nearly everyone turns out kind. Ideal for readers after warmth; wrong for those wanting tension.
