Our view

“The Broken Kingdoms” is a second volume that starts afresh, with a new heroine and a murder mystery in a city shared with gods. Oree, blind except to magic, is its most memorable idea, and its gods are proud, unpredictable and each unlike the next. Some readers need a while to settle into her story before it joins the larger one. Best read after the first book.
