Our view

“The Book of Life” closes the story of Diana Bishop and Matthew Clairmont in a way readers of the trilogy find satisfying. It brings back the humour, suspense and familiar faces of the earlier volumes and leaves room for more. Some find the plot overcomplicated in places and the cast too large to follow easily; this is escapism for those already fond of witches and vampires, not a place to start.

About the book

The Book of Life is a 2014 fantasy novel by American scholar Deborah Harkness, the third book in the All Souls trilogy. As the sequel to the 2012 bestseller, Shadow of Night, it follows the final steps in the story of Diana Bishop, a historian who comes from a long line of witches, and Matthew Clairmont, a long-lived vampire, as they unlock the secrets of an ancient manuscript.
