Our view

“The Aeronaut’s Windlass” is a steampunk adventure at its best in the air, where the airship battles have real weight and speed. Jim Butcher builds a detailed world and a lively cast, and although this first Cinder Spires book runs past six hundred pages, it tells a complete story instead of stopping on a cliffhanger. The talking cats are a matter of taste: some readers enjoy them, others find they break the spell.
