Our view
“Sorrowland” is gothic science fiction of real force, and it lingers long after the last page. Rivers Solomon builds it around Vern, whose refusal to be contained by anyone drives a tense story of survival in the wild and of conspiracy. Race, gender and what people owe their families run through all 368 pages. It offers little comfort, which is worth knowing before starting.
