“There's a lot of meta in this book. One of the story strands is about an author who's written a very successful novel about a pandemic and is now experiencing one for real, and another riffs on the plot of Mandel's previous novel. I love that sort of thing, so I was already inclined to like the book, even if it hadn't been such a touching affirmation of humanity and our shared connections. It is a pandemic novel in every sense, in story and I suspect in origin, and the message throughout is that we get through difficult times together.
