Our view
Michael Crichton’s “Rising Sun” wraps a murder investigation around a pointed look at how American and Japanese cultures differ. The killing takes place at the Los Angeles head office of a Japanese company, and the contrast between two ways of thinking and behaving is what gives the mystery its interest. Some readers find its early-1990s picture of Japanese economic power dated today. It informs as much as it entertains.
