Our view

“Angels & Demons” introduces Robert Langdon and already has the formula in place: a secret society, the Catholic Church, and a race against the clock packed into a single day. The art and architecture woven through it are the best part, and the plot is exciting enough to carry 576 pages. Some readers complain of convenient escapes, a thinly drawn hero, a female lead written mostly to be looked at, and a disappointing ending.

Worth knowing The first Robert Langdon novel (2000), set over a single day in Rome and the Vatican during a papal conclave, with antimatter stolen from CERN; the laboratory later published a page separating its real research from the plot. It sold modestly until The Da Vinci Code made Brown famous. The 2009 film, again with Tom Hanks, was made as a sequel to The Da Vinci Code, reversing the order of the books.

About the book

Angels & Demons is a 2000 bestselling mystery-thriller novel written by American author Dan Brown and published by Pocket Books and then by Corgi Books. The novel introduces the character Robert Langdon, who recurs as the protagonist of Brown's subsequent novels. Angels & Demons shares many stylistic literary elements with its sequels, such as conspiracies of secret societies, a single-day time frame, and the Catholic Church. Ancient history, architecture, and symbology are also heavily referenced throughout the book. A film adaptation was released on May 15, 2009.
