Our view
“Post Captain” deepens Jack Aubrey and Stephen Maturin, the two men at the heart of O’Brian’s Napoleonic sea novels. Some readers are thrown by an opening that keeps away from the sea and reads like a novel of manners, and others find storylines dropped without resolution. The second book of the series is strong on character, Maturin’s especially for some, and on the detail of shipboard life.
