Our view
“Kidnapped” is a classic adventure of flight across Scotland in which the land and its people come vividly alive. Robert Louis Stevenson wrote it in 1886 as a boys’ novel, and it has since won admirers from Henry James to Hilary Mantel. Some readers tire of the long chase after the opening third; others are caught off guard by the abrupt ending, which the sequel “Catriona” takes up.
