- Twenty and a half books that are one novel.
- O'Brian said so himself, and it is the only honest way to describe a series where a chapter can end mid-sentence in one volume and resume in the next; Post Captain picks up days after Master and Commander and never really lets go.
- Read them in order, from the beginning, and give the first book a hundred pages — the sailing vocabulary is dense on purpose and stops mattering once you accept that you will not understand every rope.
- The last volume is three chapters found after O'Brian died and is for completists.
- The film takes its title from book ten and its plot from several others.
