Our view
“Nation” is Terry Pratchett away from “Discworld”: an island survival story in an alternative 1860s, funny, moving and hopeful all at once. Published for young readers, it works as sheer adventure, with characters whose doings are a pleasure to follow. Some readers think adults get even more out of it, for the questions about belief and growing up that lie beneath the story. It needs no knowledge of his other books.
