Our view
The book that concludes Katniss Everdeen’s story turns from survival to open rebellion, and its mood is grim. Some readers find the first part slow before the pace picks up, and the emotional scenes less moving than intended. Katniss spends much of the fighting on the sidelines, which frustrates those who came to see her act. Worth reading to see the uprising through.
Worth knowing The war book of the trilogy, published in August 2010. Suzanne Collins, whose father was an Air Force officer who served in Vietnam, has said she wanted to show war and its cost to young people honestly, and the ending divides readers to this day. Like the last Harry Potter, it was split into two films, released in 2014 and 2015.
