Our view

“Jane Eyre” is at its strongest as the portrait of a mind: a heroine who keeps asking who she is and how far feeling should be allowed to rule her. The love story with the brooding Mr Rochester burns slowly and against a dark backdrop, so readers after a quick romance may grow restless. It rewards those who enjoy a thoughtful nineteenth-century coming-of-age novel told at an unhurried pace.

Worth knowing Charlotte Brontë published it in October 1847 as Currer Bell, two months before her sisters’ first novels appeared. Lowood School is based on the Clergy Daughters’ School at Cowan Bridge, where her two eldest sisters fell ill and later died. Jean Rhys’s Wide Sargasso Sea (1966) retells the story of the first Mrs Rochester and is often read alongside it.
