Editor’s note Jane Eyre, first published in 1847 under the pen name Currer Bell, follows an orphaned governess who falls in love with her employer, Mr Rochester, and refuses to give up her independence when his secret comes out. It is the only book of hers here with enough ratings. Readers who want more usually go on to Villette, her later and more inward novel.
