Our view
A novel of manners in which the real plot is a change of mind: Elizabeth Bennet has to learn how unreliable a quick judgement can be, and Austen makes that lesson both funny and exact. The romance moves slowly, through conversation and family obligation rather than event, in prose of 1813 that asks for some attention. Readers who know the story only at second hand may find the book richer. A light, sharp pleasure.
Worth knowing Austen drafted it in 1796–97 as First Impressions, and a publisher declined it without reading it. Revised, it appeared in January 1813 without her name, credited to the author of Sense and Sensibility, after she had sold the copyright for £110. For a screen version, the long 1995 BBC series stays closest to the book, while the 2005 film with Keira Knightley is the quicker way in.
