Editor’s note Joey Harker can get lost in his own house, and it turns out that is a talent: he is a Walker, able to step between the parallel Earths, and on every one of them there is a version of him, all of them recruited by InterWorld, an organisation of Joeys fighting a war between the magic-based empire of HEX and the science-based Binary for control of the worlds. Neil Gaiman and Michael Reaves came up with it in 1995 as a television idea nobody bought, wrote the novel together and published it in 2007 when a publisher finally asked; two sequels followed, The Silver Dream in 2013 and Eternity’s Wheel in 2015, written mostly by Reaves and his daughter. It is a fast, slight young-adult adventure, and the least Gaiman-like book with his name on it.

“I'd give it a 3.5 if I could. Unique and incredible sci-fi concept. Characters are not developed super well, lots of situations where dumb luck and/or incomprehensible powers save the day (I believe this is called deus ex machina and it's even mentioned early in…”
“I feel like this is a good example of an amazing concept with poor execution. 16 year old Joey Harker is a bit of a dimwit. At least, when it comes to navigation. He can never really tell where he's at let alone remember the…”
