Our view
A revenge tragedy with a ghost and a royal family at its centre, though its real subject is hesitation: the hero thinks where others would act, circling doubt, despair and a madness that may or may not be real. Readers return for how much human uncertainty fits into so few pages. The language is dense and written for the stage, and some find a first encounter hard going. Best read slowly, or seen performed.
