Our view
“Cyrano de Bergerac” is a spirited play of swagger and love, built around a seventeenth-century writer and soldier with a famously large nose. The opening act, set among the audience of a theatre, is a lively gallery of recognisable human types. Some readers find the courtship scenes that follow slow going on the page. At under 240 pages it is brief, and it suits those who enjoy theatre with dash and feeling.

About the book
Cyrano de Bergerac is a French play written in 1897 by Edmond Rostand. The play includes elements of the life of the 17th-century novelist and playwright Cyrano de Bergerac, along with elements of invention and myth. Cyrano's large nose is based on reality but in performance of the play is usually exaggerated.
