Our view
Erikson opens his ten-volume series in the middle of an empire’s history and explains almost nothing, which is the source of the book’s fearsome reputation. Readers who know it call that reputation overstated: the language is plain and the cast no larger than in other epic fantasy, though one must accept being lost for a while. Those who enjoy piecing a world together are rewarded; those who want a guiding hand may give up early.
