Our view

“Emperor Mage” takes “The Immortals” to a foreign imperial court and makes an absorbing third volume of the four. Daine joins Tortall’s peace delegation to Carthak to save the emperor’s birds, and the story mixes magic, gods and royalty with real tension. Some readers find her ever-growing powers wearing and wish the other characters had more life of their own; some are also uneasy when an outsider tells another culture how to live.
