Our view

“Diaspora” takes hard science fiction as far as it goes: physics and mathematics are the substance of the novel, not its decoration. Readers already at home in that science rate it very highly, and it feels strikingly modern for a book of the 1990s. Others get lost in the technical chapters; some of them follow the story anyway, while others feel that long lectures crowd out the characters.
