Our view
“Crucible of Gold” takes the “Temeraire” series to South America, where a society shared by Incas and dragons is the main attraction. Naomi Novik’s seventh volume shows Laurence open to cultures that unsettle his upbringing. Some readers prefer this travelling side of the series to its Napoleonic battles and only wish the Inca chapters went further. Others find the period-proper prose heavy going or this volume more muddled than earlier ones.
