Our view

“City of Blades” is a middle volume that moves more freely than the opener, now that the world of “The Divine Cities” is built. Its new lead, the retired general Mulaghesh, is pulled back into service to look into a disappearance in a hostile outpost, and the inquiry opens onto something far larger, with plenty of action. Readers who liked the first book’s mix of mystery and vanished gods will be well served.
