Our view

“Anno Dracula” is a clever alternate-history horror novel that crowds Victorian England with real figures and characters borrowed from fiction. Kim Newman builds a murder mystery and a conspiracy around its vampires, and readers who know Bram Stoker’s “Dracula” will find plenty to recognise. Some readers, though, struggle to get into it from the very first pages. It opens a series of four novels.
