Our view
“Angela’s Ashes” is a memoir of a destitute childhood told with humour and a striking absence of bitterness. McCourt recalls his early years in Brooklyn and then Limerick, marked by poverty and his father’s drinking, and finds comedy where it would be easy to find only grievance. The neglect it describes can make a reader angry on his behalf, so although the pages turn quickly, this is not light reading.
