Katherine Paterson
Katherine Paterson — one title in the rankings.
Editor’s note Born in China to missionary parents, Katherine Paterson became an American children’s writer and won the Newbery Medal twice. Bridge to Terabithia, her most read book, follows Jess, a lonely farm boy, and Leslie, the imaginative new girl next door, who create a secret kingdom in the woods across a creek, until a sudden tragedy. Paterson wrote it after a friend of her son was killed by lightning. Short, honest about grief and much loved; it was filmed in 2007. Her other books still have too few ratings here.
