- Uglies, Pretties, Specials are one story told by Tally and have to be read in that order — each opens on the consequences of the last, and the middle book in particular makes no sense on its own.
- Extras is different: same world, three years later, a new narrator on the other side of the planet, and it works as an epilogue you can take or leave.
- Westerfeld returned to the world much later with the Imposters books, which follow a new generation and assume you know how the first four ended.
