Our view
“Specials” keeps the Uglies series tense and gives a young audience real questions to think about: body image, waste, government control. Some readers find it an improvement on the second book, with less retreading of old ground; others feel the social themes are touched on rather than explored, and that the science behind the plot does not hold together. It is the third volume and assumes the first two.
